Baby Jane has gorgeous open/close sleep eyes, a round hole in her mouth to drink out of her bottle, a velvety red dress and thick curly black hair. She also is rare-with a fascinating history. Shindana Toy Company started in 1968 by Lous Smith II and Robert Hall-two civil rights activists-working in 1965 following the Watts riots in South-Central Los Angeles to create positive change. The name Shindana was based on the Swahili word for competitor. Smith and Hall found assistance getting into the doll business from a sympathetic competitor-the Mattel Toy Company.
