Sensational Malibu Ken (Black/African-American w/Rooted Afro Hair) (#3849). He's got the California look! Released just a few short years after the first Black Barbie, Sensational Malibu Ken was the first African-American Ken. His job may just be "beach, " but Ken is ready to do it in style in his blue shades and bright, colorful trunks.
"Sunsational" Malibu Ken is part of a sensational line of dolls that included Barbie, Christie, P. There were a couple of versions of this doll, but this is the first and featured the afro-rooted hair for increased realism. This doll is new and in his original box with a display window that's still firmly attached to the box. The box is generally in good shape, but does have a some creases, corner wear, a small crunch in one corner and a couple of small tears, including one in the the upper left back corner and one in the lower third of the white trim next to the display window. The cardboard up top, which was used to hang the doll when it was displayed in the store, is bent over but still fully intact, including the front chad that usually gets punched out. All-in-all, that's not bad for a box that is over 40 years old. Just the Tip of a Pink Iceberg. She loved dolls and spent years building a large collection centered largely around Barbie and other dolls from Mattel, including Cher, Charlie's Angels and Donny and Marie.
Items from her collection have been snatched up by collectors from Australia, Ireland, Italy, France and other locations around the world. If you have any questions about this item, just let me know.
