Antique Folk Art African American Automaton Articulated Carved Wood Figure LEWD
This little guy is a bit of a mystery. Carved from southern pine (with a jointed arm, fixed at the shoulder of white oak) he is crafted in a seated position (11 1/2" bottom to top of head; 10" deep with legs extended x 6 1/2 at widest point) with one leg fixed at the hip having an articulated knee and the other moving at the hip with fixed knee. The arm with hand moves at the shoulder, but not at the elbow.

He has original painted and varnished surface with red accents in the face and retains the original wool baize hair. His gender-specific attribute is a re-purposed early 1900s brass drawer pull. I suspect he performed a surprising trick when strings (hidden by his costume) were pulled; there are holes on the inside of one leg where some other hardware was attached. He displays beautifully as is and is a remarkable example of southern folk carving.
