Antique African American Lady Doll
Rare Antique African American Lady Doll This is a beautiful African American Lady Doll made in the Southern United States and dates from 1880. She is a well made cloth doll with hand embroidered face and body stitched in very realistic contour with shapely hips and legs, formed bosoms with red nipples. The fingernails are made of split porcupine quills and each finger is stitched individually. This Lady is dressed in original clothing- three layers of skirting- a crinoline, a lace trimmed petticoat and a lovely printed cotton over-skirt with lace and rick-rack trim.

She wears a lace bodice and blue satin apron with silk fringe. There is a chain bracelet on her arm and red iridescent beads around her neck. On her feet are little flowered high heeled shoes which match her head scarf.

The condition is very good- no wear, rips or tears-- all the stitching intact. There is some discoloration to the lace on the bodice and over-skirt and to the satin apron due to fabric aging. This doll is referenced in Miller's- Collecting Teddy Bears & Dolls- Facts at Your Fingertips- by Alison Beckett / Bunny Campione- 1996 (page 149- top).
